Marx’s Capital Volume 3 Lecture Series
Building on our Marx’s Capital Volume 1 Lecture Series and  Marx’s Capital Volume 2 Lecture
Series, The Centre for the Study of Social and Global Justice (CSSGJ) is pleased to host a
series of public lectures on Marx’s Capital Volume 3: The Process of Capitalist Production as a
Whole
, given by the political economist and activist Andy Higginbottom.

In Capital Volume 3 Marx brings together capitalist production and circulation in their concrete
combination. The book is in three main sections. The much debated first section explains the
formation of the general rate of profit for industrial capital, the contradictions that lead to the
falling rate of profit, and hence to crisis.  In the second, Marx explores commercial capital and
banking capital. Thirdly, Marx extends the concept of value in his theory of land rent as surplus-
profit.

The approach taken in the lectures is to bring out how Capital potentially connects with
theoretical critiques of imperialism. Andy will highlight where Marx’s thought provides
conceptual starting points for analysing contemporary problems such as international unequal
exchange, capital markets and the modern corporation, the state and bank debt, and extractive
capitalism.

The course will be delivered by monthly lectures and weekly reading groups. It will start on 26 th
January 2026 and proceed until early 2027.

There will be two reading groups studying the Volume 3 text together. They will meet each
week, on Wednesdays at 6.00pm and Sundays at 9.00am UK time.  So, you can choose one
or the other. Once a month, in the same week of the Monday lecture, the Wednesday group will
not read Volume 3. Instead, we will use that slot for any catch up questions, especially on
Marx’s methodology and the content of Volumes 1 and 2.
